Frequently Asked Questions: Eggs

How long past the Best Before Date can I use eggs?
It's safe to use eggs up to two weeks after the Best Before Date printed on the carton, providing the consumer is confident they have been handled correctly since purchase at the grocery store. After the Best Before Date use the eggs in ways in which they are thoroughly cooked such as in baking or hard cooked.

When is the Best Before Date?

The Best Before Date is usually 35 days after grading.

Where is the best place in the refrigerator to store eggs?

Refrigerate them in their carton in the coldest part of the refrigerator, not on the fridge door.

How long can I keep hard cooked eggs?

Hard cooked eggs can be refrigerated air-tight, in their shells or peeled, for as long as a week.

Is it safe to use raw eggs which have been frozen in the shell?

Use frozen eggs as soon as possible after defrosting in ways in which they are thoroughly cooked.

Is it safe to leave eggs at room temperature?

Perishable eggs should not be left at room temperature longer than one hour in the summer (two hours in colder months). For every hour an egg spends at room temperature, subtract a day from its shelf life.
