Frequently Asked Questions : Thawing

What is the safest way to thaw food?

The safest way to thaw food is in the refrigerator. Set meat poultry and fish on a tray to prevent their juices dripping onto other foods.

A safe alternative is to submerge the food, sealed in its package, in a sink of cold water and change the water every half hour.

Or defrost the food in the microwave, following the manufacturer’s directions and cook immediately.

Never defrost food at room temperature because bacteria can multiply rapidly on the warmer surfaces of thawing food.
